Trans-Affirming Therapy in Fort Lauderdale & Florida
You know who you are. The system is the problem — not you. You've spent years navigating a world that asks you to prove something that doesn't require proof. You've sat across from providers who treated your identity as a clinical problem to be evaluated, a diagnosis to be managed, or a lifestyle choice to be questioned before care could begin. You've learned to anticipate hostility in rooms that are supposed to help. And you've learned to manage that hypervigilance so well that most people around you have no idea how much it costs.
Are you exhausted from having to educate, justify, or defend yourself before any provider will actually help you?
Have you experienced healthcare — mental health care included — as another system you have to navigate carefully rather than one that's actually on your side?
Are you carrying anxiety, hypervigilance, or depression that has been shaped by years of navigating a world that keeps adding barriers to your care?
Have you had providers who claimed to be affirming and weren't — or who referred you out the second you disclosed of your identity?
Are you in Florida right now, watching policies change in real time, and wondering who you can actually trust?
The exhaustion of existing as a trans or gender-diverse person in a system that wasn't built for you is real, documented, and cumulative. It is not a personality trait. It is a reasonable response to an unreasonable amount of resistance.

Florida is a battleground — and that context belongs in the therapy room.
Florida has become one of the most hostile states in the country for trans and gender-diverse people. Legislative attacks on gender-affirming care, restrictions on documentation updates, and a political climate that has made visibility feel more dangerous have created a specific and measurable layer of stress for trans Floridians that did not exist at this intensity five years ago.
What minority stress actually does
The research on minority stress is clear: chronic exposure to discrimination, stigma, and the anticipation of hostility has measurable effects on mental and physical health. For trans and gender-diverse adults in Florida right now, that stress is not background noise — it is foreground. It shapes where you go, what you say, who you trust, and what you're willing to put in writing.
When healthcare itself becomes a source of harm
Trans adults in Florida are reporting increased difficulty finding affirming providers across every area of healthcare — not just mental health. The mental health system has its own history of pathologizing trans identity, and while that history has been partially addressed in clinical standards, it has not been erased in practice. Too many trans clients arrive at therapy having already had experiences that taught them not to trust the process. That history matters, and it belongs in the room.
Therapy cannot fix a hostile political climate. What it can do is give you a space that doesn't replicate it — where your identity is not in question, your history is taken seriously, and the work is actually about you rather than about convincing another provider of who you are. And you deserve a therapist who is mindful of how they document your experience and your identity.
LGBTQ+ & Gender-Affirming Therapy at Polari Psychotherapy
Specialized Care From a Clinician Who Has Been Doing This Work From The Beginning
I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Florida with specialized training in trans and gender-affirming care, and this work has been a deliberate focus of my clinical practice since the beginning of my training — not something I added when it became visible. I am one of the first AFFIRM Pro consultants nationally, a framework specifically designed for affirming practice with LGBTQ+ clients including trans and gender-diverse populations.
I have spent years on the front lines of this work, including time at one of South Florida's longest-established LGBTQ+ behavioral health nonprofits, where I saw the full range of what trans clients navigate when they try to access care in this state. I present on gender-affirming care at a nationally recognized medical conference for LGBTQ+ health, and I consult with and train other clinicians on affirming assessment practices and gender-affirming letter writing. This is not a specialty I claim peripherally. It is one I have invested in consistently and deliberately.
I work with trans and gender-diverse adults in Fort Lauderdale in person and throughout Florida via telehealth — including clients in Jacksonville, Sarasota, Naples, West Palm Beach, Tallahassee, and Vero Beach, where affirming providers are genuinely scarce. Geography should not be one more barrier to care that actually believes you.
What We Work On Together
Trans-affirming therapy at Polari Psychotherapy is individualized to you. There is no predetermined agenda for what your sessions should address. Some of what we commonly explore includes:
Hypervigilance and anxiety — the constant state of alert that comes from navigating a world that requires you to assess threat before you can be present in any room
Healthcare trauma — experiences with providers, systems, or institutions that were supposed to help and instead added to what you were carrying
Identity and self-understanding — not because your identity is in question, but because the pressure to defend it externally can disconnect you from your own relationship with it
Depression and disconnection — the flattening that happens when you've been spending energy on survival that should be available for something else
Coming out and disclosure — navigating who knows, in what contexts, with what level of safety, and what it costs to manage that across different parts of your life
Complex trauma — the accumulated weight of discrimination, family rejection, and the experience of having your identity used against you in systems designed to serve you
Gender-Affirming Assessment Letters
I write gender-affirming assessment letters for surgical clearance, gender-affirming hormone therapy, name changes, and legal documents — without gatekeeping, without making you prove what you already know about yourself. For more information about the letter-writing process and what to expect, visit the Gender-Affirming Letters page.
I am aware of the ongoing litigation and political pressure surrounding WPATH and the standards of care. The current climate does not change how I approach this work. My practice is grounded in the evidence and in my client's stated experience — not in whoever is applying political pressure to delay your care.
You May Still Have Questions
-
That's one of the most common things trans clients say when they first reach out, and it's a reasonable concern. LGBTQ+-affirming care is not a checkbox I've added to a general practice — it is the foundation of how and why this practice exists. From the first contact, I try to be transparent enough about how I work that you're not left wondering whether you'll have to manage another provider. If something doesn't feel right after we start working together, I'd rather you tell me.
-
This is a real concern and I take it seriously. I am thoughtful and intentional about what goes into your clinical record. We can discuss that process directly at any point — what is documented, what pronouns I use in your file, and what you need to know about how your information is protected. You don't have to wonder about it. We can talk about it before we start.
